Sir Francis Drake: A Heroic English Admiral and Circumnavigator of the World This exquisite miniature painting captures the likeness of Sir Francis Drake (1545-1596), an English sea captain, privateer, and admiral, renowned for his circumnavigation of the world between 1577 and 1580. Drake's daring voyages and exploits made him a legend in his time and cemented his place in history. Born in Devon, England, in 1545, Drake joined the Royal Navy at a young age and quickly distinguished himself with his bravery and skill. They returned to England in 1580, having completed the first successful circumnavigation of the world.
