Sheep grazing on a field are seen at the " Crete Senesi" (Siennese clays) area near Asciano October 6, 2011. The Crete Senesi, located in the Italian region of Tuscany to the south of Siena, consists of an untouched natural landscape of hills and woods. Some 2.5 million years ago, the area was covered by the Pliocene sea and the clay, with a distinctive grey colouring that contributes to the " lunar" appearance of the landscape, represent the sediments left behind. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of sheep grazing on a field in the Crete Senesi area near Asciano, Italy. The Siennese clays, also known as the "Crete Senesi" create a unique and almost otherworldly landscape that resembles something out of a lunar scene. These clay formations were formed over 2.5 million years ago when this region was covered by the Pliocene sea. The untouched natural landscape of hills and woods adds to the charm and tranquility of this picturesque setting. In this image, we see a flock of sheep peacefully grazing amidst these stunning surroundings, creating a harmonious blend between nature and agriculture. The distinctive grey coloring of the clay gives an ethereal touch to the entire composition, enhancing its surreal atmosphere. This photograph perfectly encapsulates both the timeless beauty and historical significance of Tuscany's Crete Senesi region. Photographer Max Rossi skillfully captures not only the visual appeal but also highlights how animals coexist with their environment in perfect harmony. Through his lens, he invites us to appreciate nature's wonders while reminding us of our responsibility to protect such precious landscapes for future generations.
