The Painter and his Pug, 1745. Artist: William Hogarth
The Painter and his Pug, 1745. The portrait deliberately projects a guide to the way Hogarth wanted others to think of him. The artists painting in informal dress rests on a pile of books labelled (in the finished engraving) Shakespeare, Milton and Swift. William Shakespeare and John Milton were generally acknowledged to be the greatest modern English authors and Jonathan Swift was a vigorous modern satirist. The palette and graver represent Hogarths twin roles as painter and engraver and the Line of Beauty alludes to his favourite art theory. The only living object in the painting is Hogarths pet pug, Trump. Hogarth announces himself as essentially English. He despised the slavish following of foreign models, and believed that art should be based on the imitation of nature, like the work of the great English authors

The Painter and his Pug, 1745
EDITORS COMMENTS
by William Hogarth is a captivating portrait that offers a glimpse into the artist's self-perception and artistic philosophy. Hogarth deliberately constructs an image that projects how he wants others to perceive him. Dressed informally, he sits amidst a stack of books labeled with the names of renowned English authors - Shakespeare, Milton, and Swift - symbolizing his admiration for their literary genius. The presence of a palette and graver signifies Hogarth's dual roles as both painter and engraver, while the inclusion of the Line of Beauty alludes to his favored art theory. However, it is Trump, Hogarth's beloved pug, who steals the spotlight as the only living subject in this composition. By featuring his faithful companion prominently in the painting, Hogarth proudly declares himself as essentially English. Rejecting foreign influences in favor of nature-inspired artistry was central to Hogarth's beliefs. He despised blindly imitating foreign models and championed an approach rooted in observing and replicating nature – much like the works produced by great English authors. This print serves not only as a self-portrait but also as a testament to Hogarth's commitment to British culture and identity during the 18th century. Through meticulous attention to detail in dress, costume choice, color palette selection, and even Trump’s presence at his side – this artwork encapsulates both personal expression and national pride within its frame.
