EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the United States Air Force (USAF) Douglas C-47B 43-48403, also known as msn 14219-25664, during its service tenure in the mid-20th century. Delivered to the United States Army Air Force in August 1944, this historic aircraft was first assigned to the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron, 316th Troop Carrier Group, within the Ninth Air Force, at RAF Cottesmore (Station 489) in the United Kingdom. In March 1945, the C-47B saw action during Operation Varsity, transporting the 9th Parachute Battalion to a drop zone at the southern edge of the Diersfordt, three miles Northwest of Wesel, Germany. Following World War II, the aircraft was reassigned to the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) and became part of the 7167 Air Transport Squadron, with the registration O-48403. From January 1967 to September 1968, the C-47B was operated by the 322 Air Division 7101 ABW 7167 ARS, and later assigned to VC-47B. However, its service came to an end on 30 October 1970 when it was struck off charge at Sondre Stromfjord for spares recovery following damage on arrival in Greenland whilst en-route to retirement at MASDC. This photograph, estimated to have been taken circa 1952, captures the C-47B in its prime, showcasing the iconic Douglas DC-3 design that revolutionized air transport and military logistics during World War II and beyond.
