This Dakota, carrying men of 156th Parachute Battalion Machine Gun Platoon, was shot down by German ack ack on 18 September 1944, the second day of Operation Market Garden. The handsome marble Memorial was erected in 2000 by the Adriaanvan Westreemen Stichting and unveiled on 3 May in the presence of the brothers of Privates Thomas Stevens and Henry Philpotts, both named on the bronze plaque which also carries an outline of a Dakota. One soldier survived the crash but died the following day. The American crew were all identified but the 18 British paratroopers on board could not be identified individually. After the war they were moved from temporary graves to the British Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery at Jonkerbos with the inscription Buried near this spot. Date: 2000

This poignant memorial, dedicated to C-47 Dakota 43-15180, stands in the quaint Dutch village of Ochten as a tribute to the brave men who lost their lives during a pivotal moment in World War II history. The Dakota, carrying the 156th Parachute Battalion Machine Gun Platoon, was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire on September 18, 1944, during Operation Market Garden, the second day of the failed attempt to seize key bridges in the Netherlands. The tragic event claimed the lives of all 18 British paratroopers on board, while the American crew were identified and repatriated. However, the individual identities of the British soldiers could not be determined. After the war, they were moved to the British Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery at Jonkerbos and interred near this spot with the inscription, "Buried near this spot." The beautiful marble memorial was erected in 2000 by the Adriaanvan Westreemen Stichting and unveiled on May 3 in the presence of the brothers of Privates Thomas Stevens and Henry Philpotts, both named on the bronze plaque that also features an outline of a Dakota. One soldier from the plane survived the crash but unfortunately passed away the following day. This moving tribute serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the conflict and the enduring bond between the Dutch and British people.
