EDITORS COMMENTS
A St. Bernard Dog with Two Priests - Switzerland, Circa 1930s The St. Bernard breed, renowned for its large size and distinctive features, originated from the monks at the hospice at the Great St. Bernard Pass in Switzerland. The earliest written records of this noble breed date back to 1707, with paintings and drawings suggesting an even earlier origin. Contrary to popular belief, these dogs did not receive any formal rescue training from the monks. Instead, younger dogs learned the art of search and rescue from their older counterparts. This photograph, taken in the 1930s, depicts two priests with a St. Bernard dog in the Swiss Alps. The Great and Little St. Bernard Hospices, two travellers' hospices on the often treacherous passes in the Western Alps, are the breed's namesake. The monks at these hospices bred and raised these dogs to help travelers navigate the harsh Alpine region. The St. Bernard dog in this photograph exudes a sense of calm and steadfastness, standing proudly between the two priests. Its large size and powerful build are evident, making it an ideal companion in the unforgiving Alpine terrain. The snow-capped mountains and pristine landscape in the background further emphasize the rugged beauty of the region. The St. Bernard breed is an integral part of the rich history and culture of the Swiss Alps. This photograph is a testament to the enduring bond between humans and these magnificent animals, as well as the important role they played in the lives of travelers in the past.
