EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, drawn and engraved by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases an intriguing assemblage of five distinct natural subjects: a Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus), a Red-fronted Coot (Fulica rufifrons), and three different specimens of Flustra foliacea seaweed, as well as a Gasteruption wasp (Gasteruption sp.). The Northern Gannet, a large seabird, is depicted in mid-flight, its wings spread wide, showcasing the elegant, streamlined form that makes it an expert fisherman. The Red-fronted Coot, a type of waterfowl, is shown perched on a piece of seaweed, its vibrant red front and distinctive plumage on full display. The three specimens of Flustra foliacea seaweed are intricately detailed, with their delicate, fan-like branches and translucent, greenish-brown coloration. The Gasteruption wasp, a parasitic insect, is shown in the lower right corner, its slender body and distinctive, elongated ovipositor providing a stark contrast to the other subjects. This engraving, with its meticulous attention to detail and beautiful hand-coloring, is a testament to the natural history illustration techniques of the 19th century. The various subjects are presented in a harmonious composition, inviting the viewer to appreciate the intricate relationships between different species and their environments.
