EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the remnants of Charing Cross Dressing Station bunkers in Ploegsteert, Belgium, stand as a poignant reminder of the historical significance of the site during the First World War. Located near the Plugstreet Experience 14-18 Interpretation Centre, these bunkers served as a dressing station, providing medical care for wounded soldiers. Like many sites in the area, the dressing station adopted a series of Central London names to help maintain a sense of familiarity and normalcy for the soldiers. The bunkers, which are now in private land, offer an intriguing opportunity for exploration. With the permission of the owner, intrepid visitors can delve into the past and uncover hidden pieces of history. One such discovery is an etched outline on one of the walls, believed to be of Bruce Bairnsfather's Old Bill, a popular cartoon character from the time. Bairnsfather's Old Bill was a humorous and satirical representation of the British soldier during the First World War. His cartoons often depicted the harsh realities of trench life with a touch of humor, providing a much-needed respite for soldiers and civilians alike. The discovery of this etching adds an interesting layer of history to the Charing Cross Dressing Station bunkers, offering a glimpse into the lives of the soldiers who once sought refuge and care within their walls. The Plugstreet Experience 14-18 Interpretation Centre provides valuable context for visitors, helping to bring the history of the area to life. The discovery of the etching in the Charing Cross Dressing Station bunkers serves as a reminder of the rich history that lies hidden beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered. This photograph, taken in 2007, captures the eerie beauty of the bunkers, standing as a testament to a time long past. The image invites us to reflect on the sacrifices made by the soldiers during the First World War and the enduring power of history to captivate and inspire us.
