Adult golden eagle feeds on red fox in region of Flatanger in north-western Norway
An adult golden eagle feeds on a red fox in a forest in the region of Flatanger in north-western Norway, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of the town of Trondheim January 30, 2012. To help this globally endangered species over the hard winter, with often temperatures dropping below minus 15 degrees centigrade (5 degrees Farenheit) nature conservationists occasionally feed the birds with foxes shot during the hunting season. The European population of golden eagles has its stronghold in Norway and Sweden with about 1500 breeding pairs. Picture taken January 30. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by Thomas Krumenacker, an adult golden eagle is seen feasting on a red fox in the enchanting region of Flatanger, located in north-western Norway. The image portrays the raw and instinctual nature of these magnificent creatures as they navigate their harsh winter surroundings. To support the survival of this globally endangered species during the unforgiving winter months, conservationists occasionally provide food for them. With temperatures dropping below minus 15 degrees centigrade (5 degrees Fahrenheit), these majestic birds rely on the sustenance provided by foxes shot during hunting season. The European population of golden eagles finds its stronghold in Norway and Sweden, with approximately 1500 breeding pairs. This particular photograph was taken against a backdrop of snow-covered trees on January 30th, showcasing both the beauty and brutality that exists within nature. With remarkable depth of field and creative use of composition, Krumenacker's lens captures every detail: from the eagle's sharp beak tearing into its prey to the lifeless carcass lying beneath it. The image serves as a reminder of how wildlife adapts to survive amidst challenging weather conditions while also highlighting our responsibility to protect these vulnerable species. Overall, this striking photograph encapsulates both the power and vulnerability inherent in nature's delicate balance.
