Orion nebulae
Orion nebulae. Optical image of nebulae 1600 light years away in the constellation of Orion. North is at top. The Flame Nebula (NGC 2024, pink, lower centre) is bisected by a dark lane of dust. To its right is the star Altinak (Zeta Orionis), the lower left of the three stars of Orions belt. Alnilam (Epsilon Orionis, centre right) is the middle star of Orions belt. Directly below Altinak is the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33), a protrusion of dark dust over the emission nebula IC 434 (red). The red glows show the ionisation of hydrogen by radiation from nearby stars. M78 (NGC 2068, white, upper left) is a reflection nebula

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Orion Nebulae, a celestial wonder located 1600 light years away in the constellation of Orion. The image captures a stunning optical view, with the North positioned at the top. At the lower center, we are drawn to the ethereal Flame Nebula (NGC 2024), adorned in delicate shades of pink and bisected by a dark lane of dust. To its right shines Altinak (Zeta Orionis), one of three stars that form Orions belt. Alnilam (Epsilon Orionis) takes its place as the middle star in this iconic stellar trio, situated towards the center-right region. Just below Altinak lies an intriguing sight -the Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33)- where dark dust protrudes over IC 434, an emission nebula emitting vibrant red glows due to hydrogen ionization caused by radiation from nearby stars. Intriguingly placed towards upper left is M78 (NGC 2068), revealing itself as a reflection nebula amidst this cosmic tapestry. This awe-inspiring composition offers us glimpses into various stages of star formation and evolution within these interstellar clouds. The Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this momentous scene, allowing us to immerse ourselves in its grandeur while contemplating our place within this vast universe.
