Paris Catacombs
Paris Catacombs. The Catacombs of Paris (Catacombes de Paris) are an underground ossuary (final resting place of human skeletal remains) in Paris, France, that holds the remains of about six million people and fills a renovated section of caverns and tunnels that are the remnants of Pariss stone mines. During the late 18th Century Paris graveyards were overflowing. Therefore, from 1786-1788 the remains of all Paris dead where exhumed and transferred to the disused mines. The underground cemetery became a tourist attraction on a small scale from the early 19th century, and has been open to the public on a regular basis since 1874
