EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Robert von Spalart's Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages (1796), showcases three distinct figures of ancient European warriors. In the foreground, a Sarmatian archer stands tall and proud, his piercing gaze fixed on an unseen enemy. Clad in intricately designed armor, the Sarmatian's protective garb is adorned with geometric patterns and embellished with gold detailing. He holds a powerful composite bow in his right hand, its curved limbs strung with sinewy sinew, while his left hand rests on the quiver slung over his shoulder. Behind the Sarmatian archer, a Belgian cavalryman on horseback charges forward, his chain-mail armor glinting in the sunlight. The horse's mane and tail are also armored, providing additional protection for the rider. The Belgian warrior's helmet is crested with an intricate design, and he brandishes a lance in his right hand, its tip pointed menacingly towards the viewer. The third figure, partially obscured by the other two, is another Belgian cavalryman, this one clad in chain-mail armor and wielding a sword. Together, these warriors represent the fierce and formidable fighting forces of ancient Europe. The Sarmatians were a powerful tribe that inhabited the region between the Danube and the Dnieper rivers, known for their skill as archers and cavalrymen. The Belgians, on the other hand, were a Celtic people who dominated much of what is now modern-day Belgium and the Netherlands. This engraving offers a glimpse into the rich history and military might of these ancient European tribes.
