EDITORS COMMENTS
: A Scene from the Charity Tableaux at London Hippodrome in 1931 In May 1931, the London Hippodrome played host to an extraordinary fundraising event in aid of the Highway Club for Boys and Girls in the east end of London. The evening was filled with a series of tableaux, each one showcasing a unique scene from different aspects of society. One of the most captivating tableaux depicted "A Day in the Life of a Debutante." On the left, the Victorian era came alive as Miss Cynthia Pratt graced the stage in a voluminous crinoline gown, embodying the elegance and refinement of a debutante from a bygone era. Her attire, complete with a high collar, long sleeves, and an intricately designed skirt, was a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the Victorian period. In stark contrast, on the right, Miss Margaret Whigham brought the modern debutante to life. Hailed as the deb of the year in 1930, Miss Whigham was the epitome of sophistication and style. Her sleek, streamlined gown, with its low neckline and bias cut, represented the changing times and the evolution of fashion. The Duchess of York graced the event with her presence, adding an air of royal elegance to the evening. As the audience watched, they were transported through time, witnessing the transformation of the debutante from the Victorian era to the modern age. The tableaux were not only a visual treat but also served as a reminder of the changing times and the enduring allure of tradition. Miss Margaret Whigham's life continued to be a subject of fascination for society columns both before and after her marriage to Charles Sweeney. She later married the 11th Duke of Argyll, adding another layer of intrigue to her already scandalous divorce case in 1963. This scene from the London Hippodrome serves as a snapshot of a bygone era, showcasing the elegance and transformation of the debutante through the decades.
