A member of an expedition group is seen on the edge of a newly formed crater on the Yamal
A member of an expedition group is seen on the edge of a newly formed crater on the Yamal Peninsula, northern Siberia November 8, 2014. A group of scientists and discoverers in November went on an expedition initiated by the Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration to research the crater after pilots captured it on video in July 2014 which attracted the attention of world public. Participants managed to descend down to about 16 metres (52.4 feet) and reached the frozen surface of the base of the crater with a lake at least 10 metres (32.8 feet) deep below, according to Vladimir Pushkarev, head of the Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration. Experts, including geologists and historians, have not come to a consensus about the origin of the funnel yet, Russian media report. Picture taken November 8. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, a member of an expedition group stands at the precipice of a newly formed crater on the Yamal Peninsula in northern Siberia. The image was captured on November 8,2014, during an expedition initiated by the Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration. This remarkable crater had gained worldwide attention after pilots recorded it on video back in July 2014. The brave participants of this scientific mission managed to descend approximately 16 meters (52.4 feet) into the depths of the crater and reached its frozen surface, revealing a mysterious lake that plunged at least 10 meters (32.8 feet) below. Vladimir Pushkarev, head of the Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration, shared these astonishing findings with experts from various fields such as geology and history. Despite extensive research and analysis conducted by these professionals, no consensus has been reached regarding the origin or formation process behind this enigmatic funnel-shaped structure. The photograph serves as a testament to human curiosity and determination to unravel nature's secrets. Vladimir Pushkarev skillfully captures both the awe-inspiring beauty and scientific significance within this single frame. It stands as a symbol for our ceaseless quest for knowledge about our planet's mysteries while reminding us that there is still much left to discover beneath Earth's vast landscapes.
