EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in August 1970, Chinese Communist revolutionary and founding father Mao Zedong (1893-1976) warmly greets Salim Rubai Ali (1935-1978), the head of state of the Peoples Democratic Republic of Yemen, or South Yemen. The meeting between these two political leaders marked a significant moment in the international relations of the time, as China and South Yemen strengthened their ties in the context of the Cold War. Mao Zedong, affectionately known as Chairman Mao, was a towering figure in Chinese history, having led the Communist Party to victory in the Chinese Civil War and established the People's Republic of China in 1949. His political thought, known as Maoism, had a profound impact on global communist movements and continues to influence political ideologies today. Salim Rubai Ali, on the other hand, was a South Yemeni politician who served as the President of the Supreme People's Council and the Chairman of the Revolutionary Council of South Yemen. South Yemen, located in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula, was a Marxist-Leninist state that existed from 1967 to 1990. The country maintained close relations with the Soviet Union and China, making this meeting between Mao and Ali particularly noteworthy. As Mao and Ali shake hands, their smiles convey a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect. This photograph captures a moment in history when two influential political figures came together to strengthen their alliance and shape the course of their respective nations. The image is a testament to the complex web of international relations during the Cold War era and the enduring impact of political ideologies on global affairs.
