The Smithfield show opens tomorrow (Monday) at Earls Court
The Smithfield show opens tomorrow (Monday) at Earls Court. Today amidst London fog prize beasts from all over the country were arriving having weathered from the journey; others are settling down taking little notice of Londons black reception. One champion beast an Angus Aberdeen which has been bought by an American, Thomas R. Chalmers was wrapped in straw and blankets with a nose protection to try and stop her from breathing in the fog. At one time her temperature was 105 degrees, but she is beginning to eat now. But everybody is working at a pace to get ready for the judges tomorrow. December 1952 P004465

The Smithfield Show - A Glimpse into Rural Majesty amidst London's Fog
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from December 1952, we are transported back to a time when the prestigious Smithfield show was about to open its doors at Earls Court. As the bustling city of London lay shrouded in a thick fog, prize beasts from all corners of the country arrived at their destination, weathered but determined. Amidst this atmospheric backdrop, some animals seemed unfazed by the black reception that awaited them. One particular champion caught our attention - an Angus Aberdeen purchased by American enthusiast Thomas R. Chalmers. This magnificent creature was carefully wrapped in straw and blankets, with even her nose protected to shield her delicate respiratory system from the fog's harmful effects. At one point during their arduous journey, her temperature soared to a concerning 105 degrees Fahrenheit; however, she has since regained her strength and appetite. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, it becomes evident that everyone involved is working tirelessly to prepare for tomorrow's judging event. The dedication and passion displayed by farmers and exhibitors alike is palpable as they strive for excellence in showcasing their livestock. This photograph encapsulates not only the spirit of agricultural competitions but also offers us a glimpse into rural scenes that were once commonplace during the 1950s. It serves as a reminder of our deep-rooted connection to nature and highlights how these shows have long been cherished traditions celebrating farming heritage.
