This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts Emperor Titus triumphantly riding in a quadriga, or four-horse chariot, following his victory over Jerusalem in 70 AD. The image, titled "Trionfo di Tito" (Triumph of Titus), was created by the renowned Italian engraver Corsi, based on a design by Giulio Ferrario for his publication "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" (Ancient and Modern Costumes of the Peoples of the World) in 1843. Emperor Titus, dressed in the traditional Roman toga, is crowned by the personification of Victory, who stands atop the arch. The goddess Roma, symbolizing the Roman Republic, leads the horses, while Roman citizens and senators look on in admiration. The triumphal procession includes soldiers carrying the spoils of war, including the Menorah, the seven-branched candelabrum, which was taken from the Second Temple in Jerusalem. The emperor is also adorned with laurel wreaths and holds a victor's wreath and a trumpet, signifying the end of the war. The interior panel of the triumphal arch is decorated with scenes from the warfare and military campaigns, showcasing the power and might of the Roman legions. The legionaries, dressed in their distinctive armor and carrying their weapons, march in formation, while the spoils of war are displayed, including captured standards and other symbols of defeated enemies. This historical illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur and pageantry of ancient Roman triumphs, and the power and prestige associated with military victory.
