EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases two fascinating species of the Lepidoptera order: the Dactyloceras lucina moth and the Common Silverspot butterfly, Aphnaeus orcas. The top image (1) depicts the Dactyloceras lucina moth, with its intricately patterned wings spread wide, revealing a striking combination of brown, orange, and white markings. The moth's thorax and abdomen are adorned with a similar color palette, adding to its overall allure. The Dactyloceras lucina, also known as the Saturnia lucina, is a large moth native to Europe and Asia. The middle image (2) presents the upper side of the Common Silverspot butterfly, Aphnaeus orcas. This butterfly's wings are characterized by their distinctive silver spots, which are more prominent on the forewings. The wings' edges are edged with a black line, and the body is a beautiful orange hue. The bottom image (3) reveals the under side of the Common Silverspot butterfly. The ventral side of the wings is a striking contrast to the upper side, featuring a darker color palette with intricate patterns. The butterfly's body is a pale orange color, and its legs and antennae are black. The Common Silverspot butterfly, also known as Thecla orcas, is native to North and Central America. Both the Dactyloceras lucina moth and the Common Silverspot butterfly are exquisite examples of the natural world's intricate beauty, and this handcoloured lithograph serves as a testament to the meticulous detail and artistry of the 19th century's entomological illustrations.
