EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 29: Crimson-fronted Barbet (Megalaima rubricapillus), a vibrant and striking avian specimen, is depicted in this exquisite 18th century painting by Pieter Cornelis de Bevere from the Loten Collection of coloured drawings. The crimson-fronted barbet, also known as the crimson-fronted piculet or the red-fronted barbet, is a small, colorful bird belonging to the Piciformes order and the Megalaimidae family. The bird is shown perched confidently on a slender green branch, its vivid crimson-red frontal shield and underparts contrasting sharply with its darker green upperparts and wings. The intricate details of the barbet's anatomy are beautifully rendered, revealing the delicate feathers, beady eyes, and curved beak. Pieter Cornelis de Bevere, born in 1710, was a renowned Flemish naturalist and artist who specialized in creating detailed illustrations of birds, mammals, insects, and plants. His work was highly regarded during his time and is still admired today for its accuracy and artistic merit. Joan Gideon Loten, the collector and compiler of the Loten Collection, was a Dutch physician and naturalist who amassed an impressive collection of natural history specimens and illustrations during his travels. The collection, which includes over 1,200 drawings, is now housed in the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands. This illustration of the crimson-fronted barbet offers a glimpse into the natural world of the 18th century, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the avian kingdom.
