EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Lord Harris, the 4th Baron Harris (1851-1932), is seen presenting certificates to members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) at Quex Park Birchington on June 11, 1920. As Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Kent during the war, Lord Harris played a significant role in the County, particularly in the absence of the Lord-Lieutenant, Lord Camden, who was away on war service. The scene captures a moment of celebration and recognition for the hard work and dedication of the VAD nurses. The photograph was taken during the winding down of the Quex Park VAD Hospital, which had opened on October 15, 1914, and closed on January 31, 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, with Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964) serving as its Commandant. Major Powell-Cotton's journal records detail the preparations for the event, including the setting up of a tent, arranging routes for nurses, and making accommodations for Aunt Sally and tables for the tea service. The Girl Guides are also mentioned, having done an excellent job in their roles. The photograph shows Lord Harris arriving by train and having tea in the library before presenting the certificates to the nurses. He spoke warmly of Thanet and the nurses in particular, before taking a tour of the garden and museum. The weather on the day was nice, and the event went off without a hitch. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the crucial role that volunteers like the VAD nurses played during the war and the recognition they received for their dedication and service.
