EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph taken in August 1915, Major Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton of Birchington, Kent, is seen in the garden at Quex House with his esteemed friend, Captain Commandant Bogaerts of the Belgian Army. Accompanying Bogaerts is his sister, Anne. Major Powell-Cotton and Bogaerts had first met in Africa a few years prior to this image, and during the tumultuous events of World War I, Bogaerts visited Quex on several occasions. Set against the backdrop of the beautiful English countryside, the scene exudes a sense of tranquility amidst the chaos of the war. The 1st Great Park at Quex, which can be glimpsed in the background, would later serve as a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) hospital, providing medical care, rehabilitation, and recuperation for wounded soldiers. Major Powell-Cotton, an accomplished explorer and naturalist, was a prominent figure in Birchington and Kent. He had made significant contributions to the study of African ethnography and was a fellow of the Royal Society. The serene garden at Quex, with its lush greenery and colorful flowers, offers a stark contrast to the desolate landscapes of the African continent that Major Powell-Cotton had explored in the years leading up to the war. Captain Commandant Bogaerts, a distinguished military leader, had led the Belgian Army's efforts to resist the German invasion of his country. His presence at Quex during these trying times underscores the international solidarity and camaraderie that emerged during the war. The image of these three individuals, united in friendship and mutual respect, stands as a testament to the human spirit's ability to find moments of peace and connection amidst the chaos of war.
