EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the essence of a bygone era, showcasing the iconic "Brighton Belle" poster from 1934. Created to promote the Southern Railway's services between London Victoria and Brighton, this all-pullman electric train was renowned for its swift one-hour journey. The poster itself is a masterpiece of design, with a central lightning bolt symbolizing speed and modernity. Beneath it lies a timetable, providing travelers with essential information. The artistic genius behind this artwork is Charles Shep Shepherd. Trained under Paul Woodroffe and serving as head of the studio at Baynard Press, Shepherd's talent shines through in every detail of this poster. His creative prowess extended beyond railway promotion; he also designed posters for esteemed entities such as the Royal Mail Packet Steam Company and London Transport. As we gaze upon this remarkable image today, we are transported back to an era when rail travel represented elegance and sophistication. The "Brighton Belle" epitomized luxury on wheels, whisking passengers away from bustling London to the picturesque coastal town of Brighton.
