EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "The Old Inn, Gulval, Cornwall" we witness a momentous occasion that took place in April 1947. The historic inn, previously owned by the late Captain Bolitho and willed to the Coldstream Guards Association for 99 years, has now been passed on to a new landlord and renamed "The Coldstreamer". As the handover ceremony unfolds, emotions run high among those present. Caught up in the overwhelming excitement of the speech being delivered, Jan Wilcock, a sprightly 74-year-old man featured in the photograph, succumbs to his emotions and faints. Thankfully, Jim Watkins rushes to his aid without hesitation. Offering him a reviving Brandy is just what Jan needs as he recovers from his unexpected collapse. Assisting them are both the caring vicar and ex-Lieutenant Bolitho. Standing tall behind the bar is Ex C. S. M Treadwell donning his ceremonial dress for this special occasion. His presence adds an air of solemnity and reverence to this gathering of soldiers and locals alike. This image captures not only a significant moment in history but also showcases camaraderie and concern within this close-knit community. It serves as a poignant reminder of how public houses like "The Coldstreamer" have always played an integral role in bringing people together across generations.
