EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Sukharev Tower in Moscow, Russia, captured by artist Otto Kirchner in 1902. The tower, an exemplary piece of Moscow Baroque architecture, was constructed between 1692 and 1695 to commemorate Peter the Great's triumph over his sister Sophia's rebellion. Named after LP Sukharev, a commander who fought alongside Peter with his regiment of Streltsy guardsmen armed with firearms. Sadly, this architectural gem met its demise during Stalinist rebuilding in 1934 when it was demolished. However, this photograph allows us to appreciate its grandeur and historical significance from a private collection. The image also provides a glimpse into life during that era as people can be seen strolling along the street beside horse-drawn carriages. It captures the essence of early twentieth-century Russia with its monochrome aesthetic. Otto Kirchner's fine artistry shines through as he expertly frames the cityscape surrounding the Sukharev Tower. This print is not only a testament to Russian history but also serves as a reminder of how architecture shapes our understanding of culture and heritage. A remarkable piece from Heritage Images' archive photos collection, this photograph transports us back to seventeenth-century Moscow while showcasing the beauty and elegance of baroque-era design. A true masterpiece by Otto Kirchner that deserves admiration for years to come.
