Scenes on the Wissahickon, 1874. Creator: John J. Harley

Scenes on the Wissahickon, 1874. Mouth of the Wissahickon, Old Log Cabin - Bridge...Falls, Wissahickon Creek, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Its water-power has been made available for manufacturing purposes; but, as it has lately been included within the limits of Fairmount Park, it is understood that the unromantic mill-buildings will be soon removed, and nothing allowed to remain which can in any way interfere with its wild and picturesque beauty... these objectionable structures are not wholly unsightly; and the factories...are so shaded by foliage that, in conjunction with the arches of the bridges near by, they offer tempting bits of form and color for the artists pencil. The old log-cabin bridge...has attracted the attention of both amateur and professional sketchers nearly as much as the falls which give variety to one of its widest stretches. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Scenes on the Wissahickon, 1874" by John J. Harley transports us to a serene and picturesque corner of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The image showcases the mouth of the Wissahickon Creek, where an old log cabin bridge stands gracefully amidst its wild and natural surroundings. Although this area was once utilized for manufacturing purposes due to its water-power potential, it has now been included within the boundaries of Fairmount Park. As a result, plans are underway to remove any structures that may detract from its untamed beauty. However, even these so-called objectionable mill-buildings possess a certain charm when viewed through an artist's lens. Shaded by lush foliage and complemented by nearby arched bridges, they offer alluring glimpses of form and color that have enticed both amateur and professional sketchers alike. The focal point of this enchanting scene is undoubtedly the falls that add variety to one of the widest stretches of Wissahickon Creek. Their cascading waters create a mesmerizing spectacle that has captivated visitors throughout history. Taken from "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1874, this print preserves not only the visual splendor but also serves as a testament to our ongoing appreciation for nature's unspoiled wonders.
