Dogs Galloping Towards The Barrier, c1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Dogs Galloping Towards The Barrier, c1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Dogs Galloping Towards The Barrier" captures a poignant moment from the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken in 1911 by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, this image is a testament to the indomitable spirit and determination of these brave explorers. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was an ambitious endeavor that aimed to continue scientific research while reaching the elusive South Pole. Led by Scott, this diverse team consisted of experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, engineering, and meteorology. In this particular scene frozen in time, we witness dogs galloping towards a barrier amidst vast icy landscapes. These loyal companions played an integral role in transportation during their treacherous journey through harsh conditions. Their presence symbolizes both companionship and resilience against nature's formidable challenges. However, despite their valiant efforts and unwavering determination, tragedy struck when they finally reached their destination on January 17th, 1912. To their dismay, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them to the South Pole just a month earlier. Faced with blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members tragically perished at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were found alongside heart-wrenching diaries documenting their struggles. This evocative photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these courageous individuals who pushed boundaries in pursuit of knowledge and exploration. It stands as a tribute to Captain Scott's enduring legacy within polar exploration history.
