1875 Alice Daughters Duchess Eldest Elisabeth Hesse Irene Ludwig Princesses
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this beautiful photograph from the late 19th century, we see the three eldest daughters of Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse and Grand Duke Ludwig of Hesse, posing for the camera. The eldest princess, Victoria (centre), is dressed in a white blouse and a dark skirt, with her hair pulled back into a neat bun. To her right, Elisabeth (right) wears a light-colored dress and a matching bonnet, her hair styled in loose curls. The youngest of the three, Irene (not pictured), was born in 1874, so this photograph was likely taken around 1875. Princess Alice, nee Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, was the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She married Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and by Rhine in 1862, and the couple had eight children together. The Hesse family was one of the most prominent European royal houses of the time, and their daughters were highly sought-after brides for other European monarchs. Victoria, the eldest, married Emperor Frederick III of Germany in 1889, but he reigned for only a short time before his death. Elisabeth, known as "Sisi," became the Empress of Austria-Hungary when she married Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1854. She was famed for her beauty and her love of the outdoors, and her tragic death in 1898 was a major shock to Europe. Irene, the youngest, married Prince Henry of Prussia in 1896. This photograph captures a moment in time when these three sisters were still young, before they went on to marry into other European royal houses and make their own marks on history. It is a reminder of the complex web of European royal families and the important roles that these women played in shaping the continent's history.
