EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent Louis XIV bibliotheque basse, crafted around 1700 by the renowned artist Andre Charles Boulle. The exquisite piece is made of ormolu-mounted ebony, ebonized wood, brass, simulated tortoiseshell, and boulle marquetry. Standing at an impressive size of 104x157.5x37 cm, it currently resides in a private collection. The bibliotheque basse features intricate details that highlight the exceptional craftsmanship of Boulle. Its breakfronted rectangular top boasts brass borders and ormolu clasps on each corner. A delicate egg-and-dart molded frieze adorns the top, leading to two glazed doors adorned with scroll and shell corner brackets. These doors frame a central door embellished with a figure of Pomona flanked by musical trophies within brass-strung borders punctuated with husk clasps. The sides of this remarkable piece are adorned with brass strung borders featuring elegant rosettes over a molded shaped apron mounted with gadrooning, foliate scrolls, and more rosettes. Completing the design are bun feet accented with gadrooned collars (although some have been replaced). Notably, several mounts were also replaced during the 19th century. Captured beautifully by eChristies Images for Fine Art Finder's collection from Bridgeman Images archives; this photograph preserves the grandeur and historical significance of this Louis XIV bibliotheque
