This photo taken on February 5, 2014 shows a hot air balloon flying over a temple as they hovers over Mandalay in Myanmar. Between the 11th and 13th centuries, Bagan in Mandalay province in Myanmar was the kingdoms capital, one of the most important centres for learning in Asia, if not the world. The kings and rulers built thousands of temples, more than 3, 000 of which are still standing today. The city is one of the Myanmars most treasured religious sites and attracts hundreds of visitors a day. But over the past 20 years, many of the temples have been renovated and now bear little resemblance to their original structures. AFP PHOTO / YE AUNG THU / AFP PHOTO / Ye Aung Thu

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking photo, taken on February 5,2014, captures the enchanting sight of a hot air balloon gracefully soaring over a majestic temple in Mandalay, Myanmar. As the vibrant colors of the balloon contrast against the ancient architecture below, it creates a mesmerizing scene that transports us back in time. Mandalay's rich historical significance becomes evident as we learn that this temple is just one of thousands built between the 11th and 13th centuries when Bagan was Myanmar's capital. Serving as an important center for learning in Asia during its heyday, these temples were once at the forefront of knowledge and spirituality. Today, Bagan remains one of Myanmar's most cherished religious sites and continues to attract countless visitors daily. However, with time comes change. Over the past two decades, many temples have undergone renovations that have altered their original structures significantly. In this image captured by Ye Aung Thu from Agence France-Presse (AFP), we witness not only the harmonious coexistence between ancient traditions and modern tourism but also how aerial exploration through hot air ballooning has become an offbeat way to experience these cultural treasures. As we gaze upon this photograph with its fish-eye perspective capturing every intricate detail from above, let us appreciate both the timeless beauty preserved within these sacred walls and marvel at how human ingenuity allows us to explore them from new heights.
