EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving from Universal Images Group (UIG) depicts Louis IX, also known as St. Louis, a prominent figure in French history. Born in 1215 into the esteemed Capetian dynasty, he ascended to the throne of France in 1226 at a young age. Louis IX's reign was marked by his unwavering devotion to Christianity and his commitment to justice and righteousness. In 1249, he embarked on the arduous journey of the 6th Crusade, driven by his desire to reclaim holy lands for Christendom. However, fate took an unexpected turn when he was captured during this crusade and held captive until being ransomed in 1250. Undeterred by this setback, Louis IX's fervor for crusading remained unshaken. He set forth on the 8th Crusade in 1270 but tragically succumbed to the deadly plague while besieging Tunis. This poignant image captures both the regal stature of King Louis IX and his deep religious convictions that defined his rule. It serves as a reminder of his valiant efforts to uphold French royalty while championing Christian ideals amidst turbulent times
