Total solar eclipse, outer corona
Total solar eclipse. Outer corona of the Sun, seen during a total solar eclipse. The corona is shaped by the Suns magnetic field, with the magnetic poles seen at upper right and lower left. The corona is a cloud of low-density plasma (hot ions) surrounding the Sun. Normally it is not visible, being obscured by the brightness of the Suns visible surface. It is revealed during a total solar eclipse, which occurs when the Moon blocks the light from the rest of the Sun. This moment of totality lasts for only a few minutes. Total solar eclipses usually occur less than once a year, and can only be seen from a small area of the Earths surface. Photographed from Turkey on 29 March 2006

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring beauty of a total solar eclipse, showcasing the outer corona of the Sun in all its glory. The intricate details of this celestial phenomenon are brought to life as the magnetic field of our star shapes the ethereal corona, with its magnetic poles visible at the upper right and lower left corners. Normally hidden from view due to the overwhelming brightness of the Sun's surface, this cloud-like formation consists of low-density plasma composed of scorching hot ions. The magic unfolds during a rare moment when the Moon aligns perfectly with the Sun, blocking its light and revealing this breathtaking spectacle known as totality. Lasting only a few precious minutes, total solar eclipses occur infrequently, offering us a glimpse into nature's grandeur that can be witnessed from only specific locations on Earth's surface. Photographed in Turkey on 29 March 2006 by Science Photo Library, this image serves as a reminder of humanity's fascination with space and our place within it. It symbolizes both our curiosity about astronomical phenomena and our desire to unravel their mysteries through astrophysics. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing sight captured in time, we are reminded once again that there is so much more beyond our world waiting to be explored and understood.
