John Dee, British mathematician

John Dee (1527-1608). 19th Century artwork of the British mathematician, astronomer, astrologer and occultist John Dee. Dee was an expert in geometry and trigonometry, and taught navigation to captains in the British Navy. Dee spent much of his time casting horoscopes and making contact with the spirit world. He was imprisoned in 1553 after casting a horoscope for Queen Mary Tudor, who accused him of trying to kill her with sorcery. After his release he advised Queen Elizabeth on science and astrology. In his later life his interest in the supernatural increased despite the suspicions of those around him, and he ultimately fell into disrepute. Published in Old England by Charles Knight (1860)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork captures the enigmatic figure of John Dee, a British mathematician whose life was shrouded in controversy and mysticism. Known for his expertise in geometry and trigonometry, Dee's brilliance extended beyond the realm of mathematics. He dedicated much of his time to teaching navigation to captains in the British Navy, ensuring safer voyages across treacherous seas. However, it was Dee's fascination with astrology and the occult that truly set him apart. Casting horoscopes and making contact with the spirit world became integral parts of his daily pursuits. This devotion led to imprisonment in 1553 when Queen Mary Tudor accused him of sorcery, alleging an attempt on her life through supernatural means. Despite this setback, Dee managed to regain favor upon release and advised Queen Elizabeth I on matters concerning science and astrology. Yet as he delved deeper into the supernatural realms during his later years, suspicion grew around him, ultimately tarnishing his reputation. The monochrome illustration showcases Dee's intense gaze against a stark white background—a visual representation of his complex character and controversial legacy. Todd-White Art Photography masterfully brings forth this historical figure from Old England by Charles Knight (1860), allowing us a glimpse into the intriguing life of one man who straddled both scientific inquiry and esoteric exploration.
