First Transatlantic Steamship Crossin

The paddle steamers SS Sirius and the SS Great Western in New York harbour after their arrival following the first transatlantic crossing by steam power. The Sirius arrived first after an 18-day crossing from Queenstown on the 22 April 1838, with the Great Western arriving from Bristol on the 23rd April, making the crossing in 14 days. The Great Western was built and designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel specifically for the transatlantic service and was on her maiden voyage. The smaller 700 ton Sirius was a coastal steamer plying between Cork an London. The usual westerly crossing time by sail was 40 days

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in maritime history - the first transatlantic steamship crossing. In the bustling New York harbor, two magnificent paddle steamers, the SS Sirius and the SS Great Western, stand proudly after completing their arduous journey. The larger of the two vessels, the SS Great Western, designed by engineering genius Isambard Kingdom Brunel specifically for this purpose, embarked on her maiden voyage from Bristol. With remarkable speed and efficiency, she crossed the vast Atlantic Ocean in just 14 days. A true marvel of engineering prowess. Following closely behind was the smaller but equally significant SS Sirius. Originally a coastal steamer plying between Cork and London, this 700-ton vessel proved its mettle by completing an impressive 18-day crossing from Queenstown to New York. This image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and technological advancement during a time when sail was still considered the primary mode of transportation across oceans. The advent of steam power revolutionized travel forever. As we gaze upon this photograph print from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how these pioneering ships paved the way for future transatlantic crossings by steam-powered vessels. Their arrival marked not only a triumph over nature's elements but also heralded a new era in global connectivity and trade. Let us celebrate these incredible achievements that continue to inspire generations with their spirit of exploration and innovation.
