Caroline Herschel

Caroline Herschel. Portrait of Caroline Lucretia Herschel (1750-1848), German-British astronomer. Caroline was the sister of William Herschel, and moved from Germany to join him in Britain in 1772. In 1782 they gave up their musical careers to study astronomy. Starting as Williams assistant, Caroline helped him to make telescope mirrors, make observations, and prepare his catalogues and reports. In 1783 she discovered three new nebulae. During 1786-97 she discovered eight new comets. She also revised Flamsteeds star catalogue to make it easier to use. Her fame led her to become the first professional female astronomer. On Williams death in 1822, Caroline returned to Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Caroline Herschel, a remarkable figure in the field of astronomy. Born in Germany, she moved to Britain in 1772 to join her brother William Herschel. Together, they embarked on a journey that would forever shape our understanding of the universe. Caroline's dedication and passion for astronomy led her to abandon her musical career alongside William in 1782. As his assistant, she played an instrumental role in their astronomical endeavors. From crafting telescope mirrors to conducting observations and preparing catalogues and reports, Caroline was an indispensable partner. In 1783, Caroline made a groundbreaking discovery by identifying three new nebulae. Her thirst for knowledge did not stop there - between 1786 and 1797 alone, she discovered an astounding eight comets. Additionally, she revised Flamsteed's star catalogue with the aim of making it more accessible for fellow astronomers. Caroline's accomplishments propelled her into becoming the first professional female astronomer of her time. Her legacy extended beyond borders as well; upon William's passing in 1822, she returned to Germany where her impact continued to be felt. This beautifully colored artwork captures both the historical significance and scientific brilliance embodied by Caroline Herschel. It serves as a testament to her pioneering spirit and unwavering determination that shattered gender barriers within the scientific community.
