EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork captures the grandeur of Borsigs factory at Oranienburg Gate in Berlin, Germany. Established by the visionary German industrialist August Borsig in 1837, this iron foundry and locomotive factory became a symbol of technological progress during its time. The print showcases the bustling activity within the factory grounds, with workers diligently crafting train locomotives that would revolutionize transportation. By the 1880s, when this engraving was created, Borsig's factories had already become powerhouses of industry. With his Moabit ironworks operational since 1849 and a third factory established in 1850, Borsig's empire employed an impressive workforce of 1800 individuals. This expansion brought great wealth to Borsig as his factories churned out hundreds of locomotives. However, amid this triumph lies a darker side: pollution. The image hints at the environmental consequences of rapid industrialization during that era. Thick plumes of smoke billow from towering chimneys, casting a somber hue over the monochrome artwork. It serves as a reminder that progress often comes at a cost. Today, this historical illustration stands as both an homage to German engineering prowess and a testament to our evolving relationship with technology and its impact on our environment.
