1862 Darwin Fertilization of Orchids
1862 first issue copy (with gilt orchid and ridged plum cloth) of " On the various contrivances by which British and foreign orchids are fertilised by insects", London, John Murray publishers. The only Darwin edition post " Origin of Species" not to be in the standard plain green binding. First book published by Darwin after " Origin of Species", and so the first book of supporting evidence for natural selection. Darwin wrote to the publisher on 24th Sept 1861 " I think this little volume will do good to the Origin", as it will show that I have worked hard at details". It must have pained Darwin that the cover gilt Cyncnoches orchid was actually figured upside-down! This unusual orchid has petals that point upward. Darwin acknowledged the influence of C.K. Sprengels 1793 pioneering (neglected) work on pollination. The subject became mainstream after Darwins interest

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the rare and significant 1862 first issue copy of Charles Darwin's "On the various contrivances by which British and foreign orchids are fertilised by insects". Published by John Murray, this edition stands out with its exquisite gilt orchid and ridged plum cloth cover, a departure from the standard plain green binding. It holds a special place in history as it is the first book published by Darwin after his groundbreaking work, "Origin of Species", making it the initial piece of supporting evidence for natural selection. Interestingly, Darwin himself expressed both excitement and disappointment regarding this volume. In a letter to the publisher dated September 24th, 1861, he wrote that he believed this little book would benefit his previous work on evolution. However, it must have been disheartening for him to discover that the cover featured an upside-down illustration of the Cyncnoches orchid – a unique species known for its upward-pointing petals. Darwin acknowledged his indebtedness to C. K. Sprengel's pioneering but overlooked research on pollination from 1793. This subject gained prominence thanks to Darwin's own fascination with flowers and their intricate relationships with insects. Overall, this photograph captures not only an aesthetically pleasing book cover but also symbolizes Darwin's relentless dedication to scientific exploration and his unwavering commitment to providing comprehensive evidence for natural selection through meticulous attention to detail.
