14th century theological cosmography
14th century theological cosmography. Close-up of a geocentric depiction of the Universe that has a T-O (orbis terrarum) map of the Earth at centre. This is divided into three, corresponding to the three known continents, Asia, Europe and Africa. The 21 ascending circles surrounding the Earth are: water, air and fire, the five known planets, the Sun, the Moon, the star-studded sky with the zodiac symbols, the crystalline sky (Primo Mobile) and then the nine hierarchies of angels (not all seen). This fresco was painted by Piero di Puccio between 1389 and 1391 in the Campo Santo, Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa, Italy. For the full artwork, see C005/5247

EDITORS COMMENTS
This close-up print captures a remarkable 14th-century theological cosmography, showcasing a geocentric depiction of the Universe. At its center lies a T-O map of the Earth, divided into three sections representing Asia, Europe, and Africa—the known continents at that time. Surrounding our planet are 21 ascending circles symbolizing water, air, fire, the five recognized planets, the Sun and Moon, followed by a star-studded sky adorned with zodiac symbols. Above this celestial expanse is depicted the crystalline sky or Primo Mobile and further up are nine hierarchies of angels (though not all visible in this image). Painted between 1389 and 1391 by Piero di Puccio in Pisa's Campo Santo cemetery within the enchanting Piazza dei Miracoli in Italy. This fresco offers us an intriguing glimpse into medieval Christian cosmology and theology during the Middle Ages. It reflects prevailing beliefs about Earth's place at the center of creation while providing insight into religious perspectives on our universe. The artwork showcases intricate details encompassing various elements such as water, spheres representing celestial bodies including planets and stars along with angelic circles denoting different hierarchies. A testament to both artistic skill and historical significance, this piece invites contemplation on humanity's understanding of existence throughout history—a reminder that knowledge evolves over time but remains deeply rooted in cultural contexts shaped by religion and scientific exploration alike.
