EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the early 1910s showcases "The Signal Station" in Newquay, Cornwall. Standing tall and proud against the picturesque backdrop of this coastal town, the Signal Station was a prominent landmark that served as a vital communication hub for seafarers during its time. Built in 1833, it played an essential role in ensuring safe navigation along these treacherous shores. In this image, we see a man standing near the building's entrance, his presence adding scale to its grandeur. The intricate details of the architecture are evident even from afar - sturdy railings enclose the structure while ropes hang nearby, perhaps hinting at maritime activities taking place within. Sadly, this historic edifice met its fate when it was demolished to make way for the Newquay War Memorial in 1920/21. A poignant reminder of sacrifice and remembrance for those who fought bravely during World War I. On Tuesday 24th May 1921, under solemn skies and with great reverence, the Duke of Cornwall unveiled this memorial that now stands where The Signal Station once proudly stood. As we gaze upon this photograph captured by an unknown photographer long ago, we are transported back to a time when The Signal Station held sway over Newquay's coastline; a testament to human ingenuity and resilience amidst nature's unpredictable forces.
