Copper Alloy Pre-decimal One Penny (1d) Coin, England
The obverse bears the youthful portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (reigned 1952-) wearing a laurel wreath in her hair. The inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F : D: + encircles the portrait. This portrait by artist Mary Gillick (1881-1965) was used on British coins until 1968 when new 5 pence and 10 pence coins were introduced, ahead of decimalisation in 1971. Royal portraits have been used on English coins for over 1000 years. The reverse features a seated Britannia holding Neptunes trident and shield, with the sea behind and a lighthouse on the left. The inscription ONE PENNY are placed on either side with the year, 1967, towards the bottom. Britannia, the female steadfast and ready warrior who is an emblem of Britain, first appeared on coins back in the Roman era. Charles II reintroduced Britannia onto British coins in 1672 and she remains on some of our coins to this day

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - a Copper Alloy Pre-decimal One Penny Coin from England. The obverse side proudly displays the youthful portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, adorned with an elegant laurel wreath in her hair. Surrounding the portrait is the inscription "ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F : D: +", paying homage to Her Majesty's reign since 1952. This iconic portrayal by artist Mary Gillick was featured on British coins until 1968 when new denominations were introduced ahead of decimalisation in 1971. On the reverse side, we are greeted by Britannia herself, seated confidently while holding Neptune's trident and shield. With the vast sea as her backdrop and a lighthouse standing tall on the left, Britannia represents Britain's unwavering strength and readiness for any challenge. Flanking her are the words "ONE PENNY" accompanied by the year of minting - 1967. It is fascinating to note that Britannia has been an enduring symbol on English coins for over a millennium, dating back to Roman times. Charles II reintroduced this emblematic figure onto British coins in 1672, ensuring her presence remains even today. This print captures not only a beautiful coin but also serves as a reminder of our rich numismatic heritage. Preserved within Cornwall's esteemed Royal Cornwall Museum collection, this object stands as testament to our united kingdom's long-standing tradition of producing exquisite coinage throughout history.
