General view of church ruins at Perthes-les-Hurlus, a former village of 151 inhabitants
General view of church ruins and the altar at Perthes-les-Hurlus, a former village of 151 inhabitants in 1914, seen November 3, 2015. The village is now largely covered by woodland and is located inside the Camp de Suippes, near Reims, France. Badly damaged headstones from the pre-war cemetery stand nearby the church. During World War One many French villages were destroyed, some never to be reconstructed because they were heavily damaged or because the nearby fields contain unexploded munitions, mines, explosives and artillery shells. The Camp de Suippes, opened in 1922, is a French Army training area for live artillery firing exercises, and closed to the public. The camp includes five damaged villages, with their churches and cemeteries that are overgrown with vegetation. Picture taken November 3, 2015. REUTERS/Charles Platiau TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the general view of church ruins at Perthes-les-Hurlus, a once-thriving village that housed 151 inhabitants in 1914. Taken on November 3,2015, the image showcases the desolate beauty of this former village, now mostly engulfed by woodland and located within the Camp de Suippes near Reims, France. The church ruins stand as a haunting testament to the destruction wrought during World War One. Nearby lie badly damaged headstones from the pre-war cemetery, serving as poignant reminders of lives lost and communities forever altered. Many French villages met similar fates during this devastating conflict - some were too heavily damaged to be rebuilt while others remain abandoned due to unexploded munitions scattered across nearby fields. The Camp de Suippes itself was established in 1922 as a training area for live artillery firing exercises by the French Army. Closed off to public access, it encompasses several damaged villages with overgrown churches and cemeteries reclaimed by nature's embrace. In this photograph's frame lies an intriguing juxtaposition between decay and serenity. The autumnal hues of brown and green dominate the scene while rusted remnants hint at past grandeur. A solitary candle stands tall amidst fallen stones and sticks; its flickering flame symbolizing hope amidst devastation. Charles Platiau's masterful composition expertly captures both the tangible remnants of history and nature's relentless reclamation efforts. This thought-provoking image serves as a powerful reminder of war's enduring impact on communities long after battles have ceased - a visual elegy etched into our collective memory.
