EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the Allied Combined Operation, codenamed Operation Gauntlet, which occurred from 25th August until 3rd September 1941. The image showcases the aftermath of a daring raid on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard Archipelago. Canadian, British, and Free Norwegian Forces joined forces to land on this remote island located an astonishing 650 miles south of the North Pole. The objective behind Operation Gauntlet was clear: deny Germany access to vital coal mines, mining infrastructure, shipping facilities, and equipment present on Spitsbergen. Additionally, suppressing wireless stations was crucial in preventing German forces from receiving valuable weather reports. In this particular snapshot captured in September 1941, we witness the mining power station at Kingsfjord rendered out of action after a successful raid by these brave soldiers. The destruction is evident as smoke billows from damaged structures and debris litters the landscape. This powerful photograph serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II and highlights the strategic importance placed upon denying resources to enemy forces. It stands as a testament to the bravery and determination exhibited by those who fought for freedom during one of history's darkest periods.
