Wreck of the Idun, Southwold, 17 January 1912" is a captivating oil painting by the talented freelance artist Reg Carter, depicting the aftermath of a tragic maritime event that took place in the coastal town of Southwold, Suffolk, in the early 1910s. The painting captures the intense and dramatic scene of the stranded Norwegian barque, Idun, which was blown onto the sandbanks during a violent storm. The Idun, a three-masted vessel, lies helplessly on the shore, its sails torn and masts broken, as the relentless waves crash against its hull. The painting's vivid colors and intricate details bring to life the raw power of the stormy sea and the desperation of the moment. In the distance, the bright light in the sky illuminates the scene, revealing the coastguard's rocket crew firing a line to attempt to haul the ship to safety. Sadly, the efforts of the coastguard were in vain, and the Idun could not be saved. However, the crew was successfully rescued, and the painting serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of those who risked their lives to save others during this harrowing event.
