EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative studio photograph captures the somber yet hopeful expressions of three Belgian patients, who were temporarily residing at the Quex Park Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Hospital in Birchington, England, during World War I. The image, taken by a local Margate photographer, shows the men wearing their uniform overcoats and two of them donning caps. The patients are identified as Prosper Cappelen (number 2), Jean Simon (number 1), and Joseph Hoebanex (number 3), as indicated by the numbers and names written on the reverse. The photograph was taken on 2 November 1914, in memory of their stay at Quex Park. The inscription on the back also reads, "En souvenir de notre agréable séjour au Quex-Park." This poignant reminder of their pleasant experience at the hospital stands in stark contrast to the hardships they must have endured during their time as war refugees. The Quex Park VAD Hospital operated from 15 October 1914 to 31 January 1919. It was initially run by the Westgate detachment, but later taken over by the Birchington detachment, led by Commandant Hannah Powell-Cotton, the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton of Quex Park. The Powell-Cotton Museum, founded by Major Powell-Cotton, is now a renowned cultural institution that showcases the natural history and world cultures collections. Cappelen, Simon, and Hoebanex were among the many patients who signed the museum's visitors book during their stay. Their signatures, dated 21 October 1914 for Cappelen and Hoebanex, and 22 October 1914 for Simon, serve as a testament to the care and compassion provided by the dedicated staff at the Quex Park VAD Hospital.
