EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph album, compiled by Chief Commander Blanche Barton of the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) between 1938 and 1945, offers a unique insight into the experiences of women in the military during the build-up to and early years of World War II. The album contains 73 photographs, the first section of which documents the training of ATS recruits at Malvern Camp in 1938. The images capture the daily life of the camp, with scenes of groups of women in uniform, inspections, the erection of tents, and portraits of individual recruits. There are also shots of more formal events, such as kit inspections, lectures, first aid training, gas mask drills, and even a pay day. The sense of camaraderie and determination is palpable, as the women prepare for their roles in the war effort. The second section of the album shifts the focus to Lancaster in 1939, with photographs of inspections, kit issuance, instruction in cookery, pay days, and even a visit from Queen Elizabeth. Another highlight is a photograph of the Princess Royal visiting the camp, as well as a shot of a march through Colwyn Bay. These images offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the women who served in the ATS during this period, providing a valuable record of their experiences and contributions to the war effort.
