The tree is native to Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, and is the primary source of true cinnamon, a highly prized spice throughout history. The True Cinnamon Tree is an evergreen, reaching up to 15 meters in height, with smooth, grey bark and glossy, elliptical leaves. The inner bark is peeled to produce the valuable spice, which is rolled up into quills and exported worldwide. The spice derived from the True Cinnamon Tree has a sweet, delicate flavour and aroma, making it a popular ingredient in various culinary dishes and traditional medicines. This beautiful illustration was produced in 1817 as part of Conrad Loddiges' Botanical Cabinet, a significant horticultural publication that showcased a wide range of plants and trees.
