This stunning chromolithograph depicts a harmonious union of three unique and intriguing fungi: Peziza, Galactinia sarrazini, and Sarcosphaera coronaria. The central figure is the Peziza mushroom, with its umbrella-like cap and gilled underbelly, a common sight in forests and meadows. To its left, the Galactinia sarrazini, or pink gall, adds a pop of color with its vibrant, pink, spherical growth. This gall forms on the stems of various trees, and the mushroom inside is believed to be a parasitic relative of the Peziza. To the right, the Sarcosphaera coronaria, or pink crown, adds an ethereal touch with its delicate, pink, star-shaped structures. This fungus grows on decaying wood and is often found in coniferous forests. The intricate details of these fungi are beautifully captured in this chromolithograph, which was created by Lassus based on an illustration by A. Bessin for Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, Atlas des Champignons, published in Paris by Paul Klincksieck in 1910. This exquisite piece not only showcases the natural beauty of these fungi but also highlights the rich history of mycological exploration in France, Switzerland, and Belgium.
