EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Giarre for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1847, depicts three significant rulers in Hungarian history: King Bela I the Champion, Gyula III, and Attila the Hun. King Bela I, the central figure, is shown in regal attire, wearing a crown adorned with precious stones and a long, flowing robe. He is known as Bela the Champion due to his military prowess and his successful defense of Hungary against invading forces. His reign from 1060 to 1063 marked a crucial period in Hungarian history, as it established the country as a major European power. To the left of King Bela I, Gyula III, the Prince of Transylvania, is depicted wearing traditional Eastern European clothing. Gyula III ruled from 1304 to 1310 and was a significant figure in the history of Transylvania, a region that was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. He was known for his military skills and his efforts to expand the territory of Transylvania. On the right, the legendary Attila the Hun, the ruler of the Hunnic Empire, is portrayed wearing traditional Hun clothing, including a fur-trimmed coat and a tall, conical hat. Attila the Hun ruled from 434 to 453 and is famous for his military conquests, which expanded the Hun Empire to include large parts of Europe. This illustration offers a glimpse into the rich history and diverse cultural influences that shaped the peoples of Hungary and the surrounding regions. The intricate details of the rulers' clothing and the vibrant colors of the hand-coloring bring the historical figures to life, making this a fascinating and valuable addition to any collection of historical illustrations or costumes.
