EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the Commandant of No. 4 Commando, Lieutenant Colonel Theo Kieffer, standing before the 4 Commando Memorial at Colleville-Montgomery in Normandy, France. The memorial, located opposite the First British Graves Memorial, serves as a tribute to both Kieffer and the French Forces of No. 4 Commando. On June 6, 1944, D-Day, Kieffer and his men landed on Sword Beach at around 0820 hours, specifically in the Queen, Red sector. Their mission was to secure the area around Ouistreham and clear the way for the advance of the British forces. However, they encountered fierce German opposition, resulting in heavy casualties and a prolonged battle. Despite the challenges, Kieffer and his troops pressed on, making significant contributions to the Allied forces' success in the early hours of the invasion. Tragically, Kieffer was killed in action on June 8, 1944, but his bravery and leadership were instrumental in the Allied forces' victory in Normandy. This memorial, dedicated to Kieffer and the French Forces of No. 4 Commando, stands as a testament to their sacrifice and courage. The photo print, taken in 2008, captures the solemn and reflective atmosphere surrounding the memorial, reminding us of the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers during one of the most significant moments in world history.
