EDITORS COMMENTS
Moeritherium: A Glimpse into the Prehistoric World of Mammals Moeritherium, an extinct genus of prehistoric mammals, is depicted in this stunning chromolithograph illustration by the renowned German artist and book illustrator, Heinrich Harder. Dating back to the Eocene epoch, around 50 million years ago, Moeritherium is considered a close relative to modern-day elephants, as evidenced by its elongated snout and columnar limbs. This illustration, titled "Moeritherium," is taken from Harder's seminal work, "Tiere der Urwelt" or "Animals of the Prehistoric World," published in Hamburg in 1916. Harder, a landscape artist by trade, brought his exceptional artistic skills to the realm of paleontology, producing exquisitely detailed and lifelike images of prehistoric creatures. The Moeritherium in this illustration is shown standing on four legs, its elongated snout reaching towards the ground, possibly in search of food. Its body is covered in coarse, shaggy fur, and its eyes are wide and expressive, giving the creature a sense of curiosity and vitality. As we gaze upon this ancient mammal, we are transported back in time, offering us a glimpse into the rich and diverse world of prehistoric animals. Moeritherium, along with countless other extinct species, serves as a reminder of the incredible journey of evolution and the wonders that lie hidden in the depths of Earth's history.
