John Lambert (1619-1683), also known as John Lambert Walker, was a prominent figure in the English Civil War, serving as a Parliamentary General. Born in Yorkshire, England, Lambert rose to prominence during the First English Civil War (1642-1646) as a commander in the New Model Army under Oliver Cromwell. He played a key role in the decisive Battle of Marston Moor in 1644, which marked the turning point of the war for the Parliamentarians. After the war, Lambert served as a member of the Long Parliament and was instrumental in the trial and execution of King Charles I in 1649. He was also a supporter of the Commonwealth of England, a short-lived experiment in self-governance that lasted from 1649 to 1653. During the Second English Civil War (1651-1652), Lambert led the forces that put down the Royalist rebellion in the North of England. However, his political ambitions and growing power led to a conflict with Cromwell and the Army Council. Lambert was eventually arrested and put on trial for treason in 1659.
